Straightened…

28 Jan

Hey beautiful ones! I recently straightened my hair and I am so glad that I did. My hair is very coily and kinky and because of those reasons it makes it hard for me to trim my ends. I decided to straighten my hair on a whim. It was a quick decision, I washed and conditioned and when I was thinking about a style I saw straight hair. I used a ceramic iron and heat protectants. Below I will list some tips that I used to straighten my hair and prevent heat damage.

** Deep condition or treat your hair prior to using heat
** Use heat protectants (I used grape seed oil, coconut oil, Motions Thermal Heatseeker Spray, and IC Fantasia straightening serum)
** I blow dried using the tension method on a medium heat setting
** Work in small sections during the blow drying and flat ironing
** Some chase the hair with a small tooth comb behind the flat iron for a straighter finish, I did not though
** Use a heat setting for your desired look (The higher the heat setting, the straighter the hair)
** I passed the flat iron one time, trimmed the bad ends, and then passed the flat iron 1-2 more times
** Follow up with a deep condition or treatment once you are ready to wash again to help your curls bounce back

I didn't desire bone straight results but I was very please. This was a few days after the flat ironing, m hair was thickening back up

I was pleased with the flat iron results but most of all I was pleased with getting my ends into good shape. I stretched the flat iron results over a few weeks with flat twists and rollers and I did not apply more heat. I watched a lot of YouTube videos on straightening natural hair and I didn’t create any heat damage. Now I think my hair is healthier because I was able to really get a good trim. I trimmed at least an inch or more from my hair. May seem like a lot but STRENGTH BEFORE LENGTH!!

What do you think of using heat? Have you experienced any heat damage?

Happy New Year to you! I hope your New Year is filled with bountiful blessings beyond your imagination. 2012 was a challenging year for me but I made it through all obstacles that came before me and I have a new fresh outlook for the New Year! I haven’t ever been so motivated to make a year success than I am about 2013. This is going to be a great year for me and for you as well.

The week before Christmas I installed some twists with extensions in my hair. Some call them two strand twists, rope twists, senegalese twists, etc. I have been wanting a protective style for a while now and I was determined to do my OWN. I tried the twists before but I couldn’t get the grip right for some reason. So I watched a few more YouTube tutorials, practiced and I did it. I mastered the twists better by starting with a braid about an inch long and then two strand twisting.

It took me about 5 hours to do my whole head. I was surprised that I did them that fast. I made the middle section bigger and then I ended up taking out the middle because all of that hair was too heavy. I used about 4 packages of 100% Kankelon Hair and it can be found at any Beauty Supply Store. Since the middle was not unfinished, I had to wear the twists in a bun, which is no biggie for me because I love a bun of any kind. I wore them for a few weeks and then took them out. I was over them. LOL Plus now that I know how to do it on my own I can do them at my convenience. If you are interested in trying your own twists or box braids there are tons of techniques and tutorials on YT, just take your pick and find the technique that works for you.

Wrap it up…

10 Jul

Happy late Sunday to you all.  I know it was like I fell off the face of the earth but I’m still alive people.  I am in South Carolina for the summer, so I had to pack all of me and the kids up and make that drive from Miami.  When I finally arrived and got settled, I started looking and looking but couldn’t find my laptop charger.  I was frantic, didn’t know whether I threw it away in all the madness or left it in Miami.  I had everyone back in Miami looking for it while I was looking for it in South Carolina.  I came to the conclusion that I was going to have to order another.  I was packing the twins in the car and *boom* there it was, right in my face.  I was embarassed and relieved at the same time.  I lost some blogging time due to that and being in the country makes a person not want to do anything but relax and that is what I have been doing but I promise to do better.  I already have a few post lined up.

Moving right along, let’s wrap it up! Head scarves people, I am talking head scarves.  I have grown to adore a cute turban or head scarf/wrap as they are very prominent in the fashion and natural hair world right now.  I think with the right accessories, tying, or outfit anyone can take a plain old scarf into a chic  and stylish accessory.

I love YouTube, and I use it for everything.  So I looked up a few vids that would give me more options on tying and wearing my scarves.  Now I will not include specific directions for every picture but the vids will give you all some really good tutorials and there are many other scarf tutorials on YouTube.  Also just play around with your scarves and you will probably develop your own *signature* style.

I hope this inspires you to rock some head wraps! They are great for a bad hair day, rainy day, protecting your hair, or just adding a little *umph* to your wardrobe.

Until next time,

Be you, Be beautiful
